Starting The New Year in Charleston, SC

We spent New Years at home with company (Melissa, Sarah, and Carrie) for game night, drinks and fondue. Cheese fondue to kick off the evening and the chocolate fondue just before midnight- finally used the fondue pot Scott got as a present more than nine years ago! Here's to a great year for our loved ones and friends... job success, happiness, love and health.

A few days later, we were able to accompany Scott for a work trip to Charleston, SC. This is becoming a family favorite- reasonable drive, a great hotel in walking distance to lots of activities, and a variety of great restaurants. We've always enjoyed spending time together in Charleston. Some favorites are walking across the bridge, the aquarium, the childrens museum, and a new favorite Cupcake bakery. Also a new fav restaurant is Hyman's Seafood- the boys tasted everything and ate like we'd starved them for days- impressive for Mannix who has been super picky lately! The boys and I entertained ourselves while Scott was at work, spending one morning at the Childrens Museum and the other just lounging in the hotel. We spent the afternoons together and went on two adventures. We explored the USS Yorktown and went to the aquarium! Here are some of our favorite photos- you can click on them to see larger or download.

While we were visiting the Yorktown, we talked with Scotts parents and found out Scott's uncle, Bill, was stationed on the USS Yorktown for over a year. During his stint, Scotts parents and grandma were aboard the USS Yorktown for a day trip on a Family Day outing. Pat said he was one of the last people to get motion sick and barf off the side.

Connor and I went down into the submarine...a new experience for me. How can people spend time underwater on subs? So cramped! The sub had mannequins scattered in a few rooms showing jobs, like captain, cook, engineers, and showing passage ways between levels. Connor didn't like the more cramped engine rooms, probably because they had alarm like noises going off, but he liked jumping through the port holes between spaces. I liked the medical room, but couldn't imagine being sick on a ship like that. Such a different lifestyle!

Who can resist a good aquarium? This is a very nice family friendly aquarium, with lots to see but not too overwhelming. Here are some of my favorite photos. A new addition to the aquarium are four adorable penguins! We loved watching them swim and dive- Mannix kept trying to kiss them!

Scott gave us lessons in poisonous snakes vs. friendly safe snakes. I don't plan to ever get close enough to see if their pupils are round or slits!

I liked the albino turtles and Connor liked the sea turtles (like in Nemo)! After our fun in Charleston, we headed home to start taking down Christmas decorations and preparing for Mannix's birthday and birthday party! Photos to come soon.

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,
We are so sad that Christmas is over... we've put away almost all the Christmas stuff. Mom still has to take down the Christmas village...maybe tomorrow, but then Christmas will be officially, undeniably over. We'll start counting down the days until next christmas! Hope you are back at the Pole, rested up, and hanging out with the elves and the reindeer. Thank you so much for a great Christmas! We both enjoyed it so much, every single light, tree, present, song, and activity. Thanks for all the great things we got to do as we counted down the days! It all started when we started listening to Christmas music around Thanksgiving...maybe a little before Thanksgiving...like Halloween!

Santa Train in early December with friends is becoming a tradition and this year we had a holiday dinner beforehand at the Ingui's Jingle Balls party. We got to see you twice this weekend, once on the Santa Train and once for a picture and chat at Connor's preschool. Sorry Connor was so banged up, he fell off the swing just before going for pictures... you probably didn't notice since Mannix was crying so much. He'll be more excited next year for sure. Please tell Rudolph that Connor got a picture of him painted on his face at Santa train... his first face painting ever. He wanted it to stay so he could show the grandparents the next day. Thanks for the candy canes!

Mom and Dad wanted a picture of us in front of the tree for the christmas card... and wanted the pets in the photo too. Easier said than done! They quickly decided Sahdow would be more trouble than its worth, but hoped Sebastian would cooperate for a minute or two. Unfortunately, he was not in the mood and didn't look too lively. Here are some of the rejects. We got dressed twice... first set ruined by Sebastian and second set nearly ruined by shaking and trying to eat bell ornaments. Aren't we still cute even when we aren't cooperating?

Dad had fun decorating the yard this year...we had a blow up Santa who talked...not as cool as you, Santa! He talked and scared us a little. And we had a blow up Santa on the roof. Our neighbors actually did more colored lights (not just white lights like last year)...but none like our yard. We forgot to take a picture to show you though. Hopefully you checked it out when you flew by the neighborhood. And we were so excited that you found us in Pennsylvania! It was fun celebrating Christmas with the O'Neills. Gramma had decorated the house and yard so nicely for us. How did you get all those presents in the house without us hearing you? You brought so many things we love and didn't expect. The sleds, clothes, and TOYS! Talking Elmo, remote controlled cars, puzzles, books, geo trax, panda, and of course, the favorite book- Everyone Poops! So much stuff, we loved it all and opening presents was fun for everyone. We had to take a break from presents (Mannix took a nap and Connor didn't want to open anymore, just wanted to play). And there was SNOW! Thanks for the white Christmas- we loved making the minature snowmen family.

And then you left more Christmas presents in NC with Grandma Mary and my great grandparents too? You must think we are special kids! Thanks for letting us share Christmas with the NC family too (Christmas #2). Before we went to Pennsylvania, our parents led the family on Tacky Tinsel Tour- Durham style. There weren't too many great houses, but some we'd never seen before including a Griswald house, and the best was right down the street from the grandparents. Mom and Dad invited everyone over to celebrate on New Years Day, with presents and lunch. Sauerkraut and hotdogs, blackeyed peas, collards and cornbread. Hopefully this will bring health, luck, and wealth to our family in 2010.

Thanks for a great Christmas Santa! We love you and can't wait for next Christmas!
Love, Connor and Mannix

Halloween 2009- Beaufort NC

The NC family spent Halloween together in Beaufort, NC, a coastal city with ties to Blackbeard. Grandma Mary rented a house with room for everyone- both sets of grandparents, Scott and I and the boys, Melissa, Sarah and Kate, and Ian and his girlfriend Michelle. Saturday was a gorgeous day and we explored the waterfront, saw wild ponies, and carved pumpkins for the annual pumpkin carving contest. Close to dark, after a spooky early dinner, we headed out for a little trick-or-treating and then went on the local Haunted Ghost Walk. Connor got the idea of trick-or-treating quickly and they were SO cute, if I say so myself. They were dressed as a fireman and a dalmation fire puppy.

I had been excited for weeks about their costumes and even overspent on Connors costume after I saw it in Costco and then they sold out. The week prior to Halloween, I was worried Connor would refuse to wear his costume...he is starting to get a little particular and testing his limits. He seemed to have lost interest in the costume after trying it on once or twice, but the idea of candy...a new interest...made him excited to get dressed. They both gladly got into their costumes, loaded into the wagon, and looked for a house with a light on. After the ghost walk, we hit a few more houses on the way back to our house. It got late, and even though he was tired, Connor still wanted to find more houses.

Unfortunately, back at our house at the end of the island, GGBob waited patiently for any trick-or-treaters to come by for candy or to see our pumpkins, but no one happened by. When we all gathered back at the house, we voted for the pumpkin contest. If I remember correctly, Mannix won for cutest with his Mr. Potato Head pumpkin, Ian and Michelle won a prize (most original or best overall) for the drunk pumpkin, and Melissa and Julie won a prize with the pirate themed pumpkin with a ship on it. Enjoy the photos- remember you can click on each photo to see it larger.

The Story of BlackBeard and his Coastal Playground

While in the Bahama's, Edward Teach began his odessy as the most feared pirate on the high seas and came to acquire the ship that he renamed "The Queen Anne's Revenge".

In New Providence, Teach met Capt. Benjamin Hornigold whose crew he joined in 1716. In very little time, he became Hornigold's protégé, and soon was given a captured sloop with six cannons to command while still serving under Hornigold.

It was during the latter part of 1717 that Hornigold and Teach encountered a large ship off St. Vincent flying the French flag. Hornigold and Teach both fired from their sloops across the bow of the French boat and killed many on board. The ship, known as the "Concorde" surrendered. She was actually a dutch built 'flute' that had come into the possession of a St. Malo frenchman. The boat was rich in booty, and with Hornigold's hold now filled with treasure, Teach asked if he could be given the command of the captured ship. Hornigold knew he was reaching the end of his pirating days, and with the wealth he had accummulated, he could retire. He agreed to give the ship to Teach and to retire to New Providence. It was the last time he would see the man he had trained well to become the vicious pirate Blackbeard.

Blackbeard honed his piracy skills, selecting bigger and better targets. But his greatest feat was yet to come. In May 1718, Blackbeard decided to blockcade the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. He stretched his vessels across the harbor and made demands of the town for money, supplies and medicine. The blockade wore on for weeks, and without firing a shot, Blackbeard slowly received what he came for. The humiliation of the town at the hands of pirates made the citizens determined to stop piracy and send a lesson to any who practiced it. Four months later, they got their hands on Stede Bonnet, Blackbeard's sometimes pirate friend. The people of Charleston hanged him.

Blackbeard gave his new ship the name "The Queen Anne's Revenge". He sailed the vessel until June of 1718, when he sailed it into the Beaufort Inlet, known at that time as the Topsail Inlet. It was there that he intentionally ran the ship aground under the pretense of cleaning off the hull. In reality, he was plotting yet another theft of booty, but this time it was from his own crew and his then ally Stede Bonnett. He took the treasure and his favorite crew members and abandoned the ship in the inlet to be taken by the tide.

After Abandoning "The Queen Anne's Revenge" and the smaller vessel "Adventure" in the inlet, Blackbeard ane the remaining crew took the other ships up Pamlico Sound to the town of Bath. There he received a pardon from the Royal Governor and lived in Bath for a time making friends with the locals and the wealthy planters.

The lure of piracy was too much for Edward Teach, and he soon fell back into sailing the North Carolina and Virginia coast looking for ships to plunder. He had settled on Ockracoke Island, near Cape Hatteras, as his outpost. It was here that Lieutenant Maynard of the Royal Navy found Blackbeard anchored at his favorite spot on the south side of the island. His ships crept up on Blackbeard's and a fierce battle broke out between them. Both sides took heavy casualties, and eventually Blackbeard was killed in battle overwhelmed by the training and firepower of the Royal navy. Blackbeard's head was cut off and his body thrown overboard where legend has that it swam around the ship several times before sinking. The skull was displayed as a trophy on Mayard's arrival in Bath and in Virginia.
